The Grand Canyon is one of the most spectacular (landschaftliche Sehenswürdigkeiten) natural features on earth. It is listed as one of the Seven Natural Wonders and became a United States national park in 1919. The park covers an area of nearly 5,000 km².
(hier: geformt) Carved by the Colorado River, the Grand Canyon (hier: schneidet sich ein) slices deep into the Colorado Plateau and forms one of the most scenic landscapes in the world. Up to 1963, when the Glen Canyon Dam was built, the Colorado river moved 143 million tons of stones each year.

Simple Past / Present Perfect
Das Simple Past nehmen wir für Handlungen oder Zustände in der Vergangenheit. Es interessiert uns einfach nur die Tatsache, dass die Handlungen passiert sind (oft gibt es eine Zeitangabe in der Vergangenheit). Das Present Perfect nehmen wir, wenn wir ausdrücken wollen, was von der Vergangenheit bis jetzt passiert ist. Im Grammatikteil kannst du alles noch einmal genau nachlesen. (Beachte, dass wir die beiden Zeitformen im Deutschen oft anders verwenden.) → Simple Past oder Present Perfect
