What pictures do you have in mind when thinking of Ireland? Is it cows, cottages and little stone walls that you see? Then the Aran Islands must be paradise for you! Just have a look at the pictures of Inishmór, the biggest of the Aran Islands.
Inishmór is 10 miles long and up to 3 miles wide. You can explore the island on foot, by bike, by bus or even by (Pferdewagen) horse carriage. Apart from the (malerisch) picturesque villages on the island you can also visit a 2500-year-old (Festung) fort.
On the Islands the Irish language is still alive. Would you like to learn some Irish?
- Eire - Ireland
- Fáilte - Welcome
- Cead mile fáilte - a hundred thousand welcomes
- Sláinte - (hier im Sinne von Prost) Cheers
- Póg Mo hón/pogue mahone - Kiss my ass (This was the early name of the Pogues until they became famous and decided that it was time to change their name.)
If you want to know what life was like on the Aran Islands at the end of the 19th century then you should read Liam O'Flaherty's wonderful novel Skerrett.
